The independent Kingdom was founded in 1380 by Ame Pal, and annexed by Nepal in the late 1700s, the former Kingdom of Lo, in 1950 was it officially declared part of Nepal. Most of the population of this valley lives near the river bank of Kali Gandaki located 2800 to 3900 meters above sea level.

The administrative center of  this District is Jomsom which has had an airport since 1962 and has become the main tourist entry point since valley was opened for trekking to western tourism in 1992.
