Sacred Damodar kunda trek to discover Damodar Kunda Lake
The Damodar Kunda Lake is well-known for its Hindu and Buddhist religious pilgrimages. The sacred Damodar Kunda is situated in rain shadows cold desert at the altitude of 4890 meters in the lap Himalayas in Upper Mustang, and falls on the north east of Mustang District, Nepal and is very close to the Tibet border.
Damodar kunda is the main source of fossil stone; origin of the Kaligandaki River; according Hinduism fossil stones are the incarnation of God Bishnu. It is a cold and windy place. The best time to visit it is on the full moon in August, however any time during April to September is fine.
The place attracts many Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimages on the full moon day. The place is very beautiful and the Damodar Himal in the North and the Annapurna Himalayan massif in the South are clearly visible from here. The walk to the Damodar Kunda trek is less frequented, challenging and very long one.
To trek to the Damodar kunda mustang, you would require a special trekking permit which can be obtained from legal trekking agency of Nepal. The trek would ideally require 3 weeks. To be able to trek one would be required to be in a good physically fit condition. The trek begins from Jomsom, the district headquarters of Mustang, after 25 minutes fight from Pokhara, Nepal.
To enter Nepal one can fly to Kathmandu. To reach Pokhara one could either fly or take the road from Kathmandu. Both Pokhara and Jomsom are linked to Kathmandu by air or road. To reach the lake, you need a 7 days trek to Kagbeni via Ghorepani poon hill in Kali Gandaki valley and would take 7 days to return. Damodar kunda trek got it name after holy pond Damodar Kunda.
The whole trek in the Kagbeni, Chele, upper Mustang is a very beautiful one. It can be done either by foot or on a pony. The trek involves scaling a high altitude and should be designed in view of acclimatization and comfort. On the return Mustang trek Nepal, you can visit the temple of Lord Muktinath.
Damodar Kunda trek is suitable for those who have previous high altitude walking experience. To be comfortable in the trek, you would require warm cloths, a pair of hiking shoes, woolen socks, sun glass, sun-tan cream, nuts, biscuits, torch and camera.
