Makalu Barun National Park is recognized as a place of global significance thanks to its exclusive biodiversity. This place is a part of Eastern Nepal with an area of 1500 sq km; buffer zone 830 sq km. National park spreads Solukhumbu and Sankhusava districts northeast Nepal. This place is considered as a virgin landscape since it is a virtually uninhabited place.

This terrain stretches between the Sagarmatha National Park, the high Tibetan plateaus and the gorge created by Arun River. Those who visit this place enjoy the spectacular views of the majestic Himalayan peaks such as Mount Makalu which is the fifth highest mountain in the world, Mount Chamlang, Everest and Mount Baruntse.

Since the parks comprises of an uninhabited place, the flora and fauna here are not affected by humans. There are more than 3000 different species of plants, more than 400 different species of birds and about 75 endangered species of wildlife in the Makalu Barun valley Nepal.

The wildlife here includes red panda, musk deer, clouded leopard, snow leopard and Himalayan black bear. As per an agreement between Nepal and China, the Barun valley is an international protected area. The trek to the Barun Valley is at the foot of Mount Makalu Nepal and across the trek there are a number of high passes. This area is ideal for those who are adventurous.

Flora and fauna

The Makalu National Park is a rich source of so many medicinal plants that are very valuable. Here one can see more than 40 varieties of orchid, about 25 varieties of rhododendron, about 20 varieties of bamboos and about 50 varieties of primrose. Among the hundreds of different species of birds in this valley, the olive ground warbler and the spotted wren babble are not found in any other part of Nepal.

The Makalu Barun National Park has considerable population of wildlife such as Himalayan marmot, weasel, barking deer, Himalayan Tahr, wild boar, goral and serow. It was established in 1992 to protect Himalayan remarkable biodiversity, living laboratory and mountain ecosystems on earth. It is the world’s only protected area with an elevation gain of more than 8,000 m (26,000 ft) enclosing tropical forest as well as snow-capped peaks.
