The Makalu circuit trek is a classic trekking trip of Himalaya Makalu region. Those who crave for an adventurous and challenging trekking experience can very well opt for the Makalu circuit trek. The Makalu circuit trek is known for the three passes – Sherpani col at 6146m, West col at 6143m and Amphu laptsha at 5845m After the Makalu base camp.

These three passes are very difficult to cross and only the experienced trekkers who are physically strong can undertake this trek. After crossing the Sherpani col the trekkers camp at Baruntse massif. The next day they cross West col and relax at another camp.

The next day they cross the most difficult Amphu laptsha. Mount Makalu is the fifth highest peak in the world. Though the Makalu circuit trek is a popular adventure trek, this is one among the least visited trekking trails in Nepal.

Makalu circuit trek is a camping trek. The great attraction of the Makalu circuit trek is the panoramic views of several mountain ranges including Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Everest, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Chamlang and other mountains. The trekking starts from Tumlingtar and after crossing the three tough passes the trekkers arrive at the Everest region.

From Everest trekking region they descend to Lukla and return to Kathmandu. Another great aspect of the Makalu circuit trek is that this trek is located in the Makalu Barun National park as well as the Sagarmatha National park. Here one can find not less than 3000 species of flowers, hundreds of orchid varieties and about 48 species of wildlife.

This park shelters various endangered species like leopard, musk deer, Himalayan Tahr, Ghoral and Red Panda. About 400 bird species are also identified here. About 30 types of Rhododendron plants and hundreds of varieties of orchids are found here. March to May and September to November are the best seasons for this trekking.

After the excursion in the base camp of Mount Makalu, the trekkers cross the three difficult passes. The trekking trail of Makalu circuit trek passes through a rarely trekked trail. Besides stunning views of the high peaks, the trail passes through several settlements. At the foot of the Barun glacier, the trekkers move to a higher camp and make final preparations to cross the three passes.

This trek starts at Tumlingtar and ends at Lukla. At Sherson, the trekkers are provided two days time for acclimatization. Around Makalu trek follow the picturesque and rarely trekked route, which passes through a number of interesting settlements and offers tantalizing views of the highest peaks of the earth. It is suitable for experienced hikers or climbers with alpine experience.

Day 04: Trek from Kahandbari to Chichila (1980m).

Day 05: Trek from Chichila to Mude (1943m).

Day 06: Trek from Mude to Seduwa (1500m).

Day 07: Trek from Seduwa to Tashigoan (2100m).

Day 08: Trek from Tashigoan to Khongma (3500m).

Day 09: Trek to Mumbuk (3540m) via Shipton La (4125m).

Day 10: Trek from Mumbuk to Nehe Kharka (3700m)

Day 11: Rest day at Nehe Kharka for acclimatization.

Day 12: Trek from Nehe Kharka to Merek (4100m)

Day 13: Trek from Merek to Makalu base camp (4870m).

Day 14: Rest day at Makalu base camp for acclimatization.

Day 15: Trek from Makalu base camp to French Camp.

Day 16: Trek from French camp to East col camp (6100m).

Day 17: Trek to Baruntse base camp via Sherpani Col (6146m)

Day 18: Trek from Baruntse base camp (6050m) to Seto Pokhari.

Day 19: Trek from Seto Pokhari to Amphu lapcha high camp (5,527m).

Day 20: Cross Amphu Laptsa pass 5,845m, trek to Imja valley (4730m).

Day 21: Trek from Chukung to Lobuche via Kongma la pass (5535m).

Day 22: Trek to Everest base camp via Gorakshep (5140m).

Day 23: Hiking to Kala Patthar  5550m and trek to Pheriche (4240m).

Day 24: Trek from Pheriche to Tyangboche (3860m).

Day 25: Trek from Tyangboche to Namche bazaar (3440m).

Day 26: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2840m).

Day 27: Trek Lukla to Kathmandu, evening farewell dinner.
