Manaslu Tsum valley trek overview

Tsum valley trekking is an opportunity to discover sacred Himalayan pilgrimage valley situated in northern part of Gorkha Nepal. Tsum valley comes on the NepalTibet border and is on the northern part of Manaslu. The entire valley is full of mountains, passes and gorges.

Those who take the Tsum valley trek get the opportunity to pass through the majestic mountain ranges of Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal and Boudha Himal. The initial part of this trekking trail is through the dense forests of Budhi Gandaki valley. After the Manaslu trail on way to Tsum valley the trekkers pass through glacial rivers and picturesque alpine forests.

The hospitality of the local people makes it an exciting trip for the trekkers. The ancient Budhist Gompas like Rachen Gompa, Mu Gompa and Milarepa’s cave are on the way. Being one of the sacred valleys of Buddhism, Tsum valley is also known as the hidden valley.

The local monks and nuns and the old monasteries are behind the spiritual progress of this place. Due to its remoteness, sacred valley has been bypassed by mainstream development for centuries. Tsum valley trekking route was opened in October, 2007 for foreign trekkers.

The traditional unspoiled culture and the scenic beauty are the attractions of Tsum valley trek. Those who take the Tsum valley trek get the opportunity to learn more about Buddhism and know about the rich cultural heritage of this place from the Buddhist monks whom they meet during the trekking in Manaslu area.

Besides the adventures that are usual aspects of trekking, the spiritual aspect makes the Tsum valley trek quite different from other treks. The Buddhist monks accompany the groups of trekkers and take them to the traditional villages, monasteries and sacred caves.

Though adventurous, the Manaslu Tsum valley trek is not so challenging and one can have the views of spectacular mountain ranges. The Gorkha Tsum valley trek suites for all kind of trekkers. Best season of the year for this trek is March to May and August to November. Those who are physically strong and are with some trekking experience can enjoy this moderate trek.

Manaslu Tsum valley situated in controlled area in this way special permit is required for trekking including Manaslu conservation area permit. The Tsum valley trek consists of more hiking and less steep climbing. Most parts of the trek are of gradual incline; normally the trekkers go up to Mu Gompa which is at an altitude of 3500m.

Since the trekking trail passes through remote villages, it is a camping trek, unlike the Everest base camp trek. The most important characteristic of this trek is the high altitude Tibetan culture where peoples still practice Bon religion and polyandry system. Here one can find the traditional lifestyle of the Tibetan traders.

The yak caravans that go to Tibet, wild landscape and clusters of small houses with smoky kitchens are very common here. There are a few monasteries also. Though the trekkers can view a few snowy mountains of the Himalayas, when compared to Annapurna circuit, they are less in number.
